Food & Fuel - The Ohio Corn Growers Association continues to successfully dispel several myths about the impact of supplying corn for the creation of ethanol.

The facts are clear: Growers proudly produce more than enough corn to supply both the ethanol and food industries. Corn growers have shown they grow more corn on fewer acres, using fewer imputs such as fertilizer, herbicides and water.

Ethanol and Higher Ethanol Blends- Ethanol is our country’s most viable and available alternative fuel, and it’s the job of the Ohio Corn Growers Association to support its use. Ethanol is better for your car, friendlier to the environment and helps reduce our dependence on foreign oil.

While the United States continues to develop other alternative fuels, ethanol is here now, and it is already widely used in our fuel industry. In fact, many people don’t even know that the gasoline they use in their car is already blended with ethanol.

The Ohio Corn Growers Association supports increasing ethanol blends in the nation’s fuel supply to help alleviate U.S. dependence on foreign oil and as a benefit to the environment.

Ethanol is a clean burning, domestically produced fuel derived from crops, such as corn, that is blended with gasoline. Its use as a fuel additive is federally mandated. Corn production assists a variety of world markets, including fuel, and has an opportunity to further assist the gasoline industry with a proposal to increase ethanol concentrations at the pump.

The Clean Air Act waiver filed with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) suggests raising the current limit an additional five percent for each gallon of gasoline produced. The proposed increase would not require a 15 percent blend of ethanol in gasoline, but provides flexibility for the fuel blender and fuel retailer to incorporate more ethanol if the economics are suitable.

The waiver is both economically and environmentally advantageous. Increased ethanol levels would bolster not only the agricultural industry, but also society and the economy at all levels. By increasing ethanol blends from 10 to 15 percent, the U.S. can add 130,000 jobs and displace some seven billion gallons of foreign-made gasoline. Ethanol reduces air pollutants and is fully biodegradable, making its increased use in gasoline green-friendly.
